A Purple Haze: new species of Brazilian Atlantic Forest plant with purple flowers named after Jimi Hendrix/Uma "Névoa Púrpura: uma nova espécie da Mata Atlântica com folhas púrpuras é nomeada em homenagem a Jimi Hendrix

Thanks to the Facebook page Detweb, which specializes in plant identification, it was possible to establish contact with researcher Idimá Costa and learn about a new species of the Conchocarpus, family Rutaceae (the orange family), a shrub from the understory of the forest with purple flowers, known only from the Atlantic Forest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The plant was named Conchocarpus hendrixii, after the great American composer and guitarist Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970), in a direct reference to his famous song Purple Haze.

One of Hendrix's most famous images is his guitar on fire at his 1967 show at the Monterey Festival (California, USA). In these days, with global concerns on forest destruction by burning on the agenda, how about turning Hendrix's guitar fire on a plant growing with purple flowers? All wrapped in a "Purple Haze", in a fantastic rereading designed by one of the authors of the article, Heloísa Maeoka.

Flores da Dilenia e duas novas aquisições para o Viveiro da Botânica

Dillenia indica (Dilleniaceae)

Hoje foi dia de plantar duas novas aquisições no Viveiro da Botânica abaixo) , mas no final uma surpresa estava para ser revelada. Esta surpresa ficou por conta da Dillenia indica (Dilleniaceae - árvore-da-pataca, Dilenia ou maçã-de-elefante), flagrada com uma flor totalmente aberta e com as cinco pétalas ainda presas à flor - elas caem com muita facilidade depois da abertura. Um outro post sobre esta planta foi publicado no Blog há alguns anos (ver AQUI)

Das plantas novas, foram plantadas mudas do mandacaru-da-praia, Cereus fernambucensis, no Jardim de Pedras do Viveiro. A mesma planta cuja floração foi filmada em time lapse há algum tempo (ver AQUI)

A outra novidade foi o plantio de três mudas de Passiflora mixta (Passifloraceae), uma doação muito especial de Carolina Ferreira de uma planta do Equador. Quando plenamente desenvolvida, esperamos belas flores róseas desta espécie andina.

A flower at night - a timelapse of Cereus fernambucensis

Cereus fernambucensis (the "mandacaru-da-praia") is a species of cactus exclusive to Brazil that occurs in coastal areas of Pará and Bahia to São Paulo; there are also collections in Minas Gerais. This species occurs in restingas and rocky areas.

The flower of this species is nocturnal (it opens at night) and pollination is done by moths. Flowers are large (about 25 cm long), opening at night and closing in the morning. They open only once and then wither.

The video was taken with a catch that lasted about 15 hours, from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. the following morning. The plant is a Cereus cultivated in pot, but coming from Mongaguá, in the state of São Paulo shore, Brazil. Note the tepals opening (pink or white sterile elements) and the movement of the stigma and style (see image below to understand these terms). In the video you can see beetles, flies and hemiptera landing on the flower.

There are some cacti videos with nocturnal flowers on youtube (like Ephyphyllum - the queen of the night). But this is the first video of Cereus fernambucensis!

The music is a "Lundu" (a folk Brazilian style of music) collected by Martius and Spix in the XIX Century, in their famous expedition to Brazil (1827-1820) - an idea of our pos-graduate student Laura Affonso.

Polinização: Para que servem as flores?/ Pollination: what are flowers for?

No dia 25 de maio de 2017 foi apresentada a palestra "Polinização: para que servem as flores?" na Casa da Ciência, um programa de divulgação científica mantido pelo Hemocentro de Ribeirão Preto. Foi uma ótima oportunidade para mostrar para estudantes do Ensino Médio de diferentes escolas de Ribeirão Preto e cidades vizinhas como as flores foram modificadas ao longo da evolução para otimizar o processo de polinização.

Agradecimentos mais do que especiais à Dra. Carolina Ferreira (Departamento de Biologia da FFCLRP-USP pela confecção e organização dos slides e pelo convite pela equipe da Casa da Ciência pelo convite!

On May 25th, 2017 it was presented the lecture "Pollination: What are flowers for?" at the "Casa da Ciência, a program of scientific dissemination maintained by the Hemocentro of Ribeirão Preto. It was a great opportunity to show to high school students from different education nstitutions from Ribeirão Preto and neighboring cities how the flowers were modified throughout the evolution to optimize the pollination process.

Well deserved thanks to Dr. Carolina Ferreira (Department of Biology of FFCLRP-USP for the preparation and organization of the slides and the Casa da Ciência staff for inviting me.

Darwin Day 2017 Ribeirão Preto!

O "Darwin Day RP" (RP - Ribeirão Preto, Brasil), é um evento organizado pelos alunos de pós-graduação do Departamento de Biologia (FFCLRP) da Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil. Dois Programas de Pós-Graduação estão envolvidos: o de Biologia Comparada o de Entomologia. O evento tem como objetivo discutir as idéias de Charles Darwin, assim como o seu legado no campo da Biologia.

O evento será realizado amanhã, 10 de maio, na Faculdade de Direito de Ribeirão Preto

Paola discute dados biogeográficos em Barnadesia (Asteraceae: Barnadesioideae)/ Paola discusses biogeographical data on Barnadesia (Barnadesioideae, Asteraceae)

Paola Lima Ferreira, doutoranda do nosso Laboratório, apresentou no último dia 22 de setembro resultados de um estudo feito em uma disciplina ministrada pelo Prof. Jósé Rubens Pirani - Biogeografia de Plantas Vasculares (Instituto de Biociências, USP-campus São Paulo).O estudo foi sobre a distribuição e biogeografia do gênero Barnadesia, pertencente à subfamília Barnadesioideae (família Asteraceae, a família dos girassóis e das margaridas).

Como de costume, toda a atividade foi em inglês, inclusive a seção de perguntas, como treinamento para conferências internacionais e contatos no exterior.

Lembrando que Paola já tinha recebido uma menção honrosa pelo seu trabalho no VI Encontro de Biologia Comparada (ver post AQUI).

Os Seminários do Laboratório são toda a quinta-feira, 16:00h, enfocando telas em Sistemática de Plantas. Estudantes e docentes são sempre bem vindos.

A mestranda Laura Affonso conduzirá a próxima atividade. Título: Estrutura e desenvolvimento de canais secretores em frutos de Schinus terenbenthifolius (Anacardiaceae). Até!

Paola Lima Ferreira (PhD student in our laboratory) presented last September the 22th the results of a study in a subject taught by Prof. José Rubens Pirani - Biogeography of Vascular Plants (Institute of Biosciences, USP-São Paulo campus) .The study was focused on the distribution and biogeography of Barnadesia, a genus that belongs to the subfamily Barnadesioideae (Family Asteraceae, the family of sunflowers and daisies).

As usual, all the activity was in English, including the questions, a kind of training for international conferences and to establish contacts abroad.

Just remembering Paola had already received an honorable mention for her work in the VI Meeting of Comparative Biology (see HERE)

The Seminars of the Laboratory are hold every Thursday, 4:00h p.m., focusing topics in Plant Systematics. Students and professors are always welcome.

The graduate student Laura Affonso will lead the next activity. Title: Structure and development of secretory cavities in fruis of Schinus terebenthifolius (Anacardiaceae). See you!

Visitando o Jardim Botânico de São Paulo/Visiting the São Paulo Botanic Garden

Neste último final de semana ocorreu a excursão anual dos alunos de graduação do nosso curso de Ciências Biológicas para o Jardim Botânico de São Paulo (JBSP), localizado na cidade de São Paulo. O JBSP possui uma parte de visitação e também uma reserva de Mata Atlântica, além de um pequeno (mas muito charmoso!) museu. Sem contar a divisão de pesquisas nas diferentes áreas de Botânica.

Cerca de cinquenta estudantes da turma do 1. ano puderam conhecer o Jardim e aprender um pouco sobre morfologia, conservação, filogenia e biogeografia das plantas.

This last weekend was the annual tour of the undergraduate students of our course of Biological Sciences at the São Paulo Botanic Garden (JBSP), located in São Paulo City. The JBSP has a visitation center and also an Atlantic Rainforest reserve, besides a small (but charming!) botanical museum. Not counting the division of research in different fields of botany.
About fifty students from the first year class got to know the garden and learn a little about morphology, conservation, phylogeny and biogeography of plants.
